A Veteran Guide to Capturing Your Ideal Audience
Dear Fellow,
Have you ever spent time creating content only to realise later that it wasn’t resonating with the right people? Even seasoned professionals can make this common mistake.
I once sent technical updates to a client who needed to be the right stakeholder for that information.
When he politely redirected me to the correct person, I realised I had wasted his time and mine.
On this occasion, I really felt inadequate, and it was one of the worst possible feelings. I don’t want to feel like this anymore!
So, how do you avoid this?
By deeply understanding your customers’ wants—what drives them, what bothers them, and what they aim to achieve—you can create content that speaks to them.
Who is Your Ideal Customer?
Imagine your perfect audience member as an “avatar” – a detailed profile of who they are. Picture their roles, age, location, gender, job, income, education, family life, hobbies, daily routines, goals, and challenges.
This mental image will guide you in making smarter content choices.
Finding Out Who They Are
You don’t need to guess who your audience is; use free online tools like Google Analytics or Facebook’s Audience Insights to gather data. These tools can reveal who visits your site and their interests, helping you tailor your content more effectively.
What Do They Care About?
Join your audience in their conversations. What topics, trends, brands, or products are they discussing? Understanding these will help you create content that resonates. For example, if your audience includes yoga teachers, they might value wellness, travel, and professional growth content.
What Bothers Them?
Pay attention to your audience’s complaints, both online and in the feedback you receive.
Please don’t make the same mistakes I did!
These frustrations allow you to step in with solutions others aren’t offering.
If, for instance, yoga students struggle with safely adjusting poses, your content can guide that.
Understanding Their Buying Journey
Consider the steps your audience takes, from discovering a product to purchasing.
By understanding this journey, you can create content that addresses their needs at every stage, turning visitors into loyal supporters.
For example, a yoga teacher’s journey might involve seeking certification, finding mentors, and recommending brands.
Stay Relevant and Adaptive
Stay active on social media to keep up with your audience’s evolving interests and challenges.
Adjusting your content strategy based on their needs shows that you truly understand them—sometimes even before they know what they need.
In summary, save time writing for the right readers by focusing on truly understanding your target audience.
Your content will resonate and convert.
