Cookies and other tracking tools

hitechstories.com uses cookies and, where applicable, similar technologies necessary for the functioning, security and proper delivery of the website. Additional measurement tools, personalisation features or third-party services may only be used where they are actually present in the website’s current configuration and, where required by applicable legislation, subject to the user’s consent. Cookies are small text files that a website may store on the user’s device whilst browsing. Some are strictly necessary for the website to function; others may be used, if present and authorised, to measure website usage, integrate external services or fulfil additional purposes. The configuration of hitechstories.com may evolve over time. For this reason, the list of cookies and tracking tools must reflect the services actually active on the site and is reviewed whenever plugins, components or services that may introduce new tracking technologies are installed, removed or modified.

Technical cookies

hitechstories.com uses technical cookies necessary for the functioning of the website and the services requested by the user. For each technical cookie actually detected, the following information must be provided: Cookie name — Provider — Purpose — Duration The detailed list must be generated on the basis of the current actual configuration of hitechstories.com and must not contain cookies assumed to be present solely on the basis of the presence of WordPress or a specific plugin. Strictly necessary cookies do not require prior consent when they are used solely to enable the transmission of a communication or to provide a service expressly requested by the user. They are, however, described in this Cookie Policy. Note for HTS Publication Readiness: I would not manually enter names such as wordpress_logged_in_*, wordpress_sec_* etc. here without having detected them. The module should perform a scan and generate the ‘Actual Cookie Inventory’ table.

Preference Management

When hitechstories.com uses technologies for which consent is required, a preferences management system is presented upon the user’s first visit. The user must be able to: accept optional processing; refuse it whilst keeping only the strictly necessary tools active; select any available categories separately; subsequently amend or withdraw their preferences just as easily as they were initially set. Failure to accept optional cookies must not prevent access to the standard content of the website, except for features that are technically dependent on the service that has been refused. The name and specific functionality of the banner/CMP must be automatically displayed in this section once HTS Publication Readiness has identified the system actually used by the website. This is important: I would not write, for example, ‘CookieYes’, ‘Complianz’ or anything else until the plugin has verified their presence.

Browser settings

Users can also configure their browser to allow, block or delete cookies stored on their device. The procedures vary depending on the browser used and can generally be managed in the relevant settings for privacy, security, website data or cookies. However, disabling cookies across the board via the browser may compromise certain website features. In particular, blocking technically necessary cookies may prevent certain functions from working properly, whilst rejecting optional cookies should be limited to those features or services that depend on such tools. Browser settings also operate independently of any preferences you may have set via the consent system on hitechstories.com.

The addition, removal or modification of a service that is potentially capable of using cookies or other identifiers must set the Cookie Kit status to ‘NEEDS REVIEW’ until a new verification has been carried out.
